Sally Ride’s Astral Dream is a short-form art video by filmmaker Patty Mooney that blends historic NASA space footage, original music and carefully integrated AI-assisted imagery into a poetic tribute to astronaut and physicist Sally Ride.
The project grew from a real encounter.
Years earlier, Patty Mooney and Mark Schulze interviewed Sally Ride while she was teaching in the Engineering Department at the University of California San Diego. During the conversation, Patty asked Ride how she felt about the song “Mustang Sally.”
Ride smiled and replied that she had heard it a few times.
It was a small exchange, but a memorable one.
Behind the extraordinary public figure was a woman capable of humor, warmth and understatement. That brief glimpse of the person behind the history remained with Patty and Mark long after the interview ended.
Sally Ride’s Astral Dream grows from that memory.
Rather than presenting a conventional biography, the film imagines an interior landscape: what it might feel like to drift between Earth, memory and the immensity of space.
Authentic NASA imagery provides the visual foundation. The curvature of Earth, orbital flight, starfields and spacecraft movement become both historical record and reverie.
AI-assisted imagery is woven into those archival materials to extend the film beyond documentation and into dream.
The effect is not intended to recreate history, but to suggest thought, remembrance and the emotional experience of looking back at our planet from beyond it.
Original music by Candace Love guides the journey. The soundtrack moves gently between intimacy and vastness, allowing the images room to breathe while creating the sensation of floating somewhere between science and wonder.
