Where it began
Years ago, Patty Mooney and Mark Schulze interviewed Sally Ride while she was teaching at the University of California San Diego.
Partway through, Patty asked her how she felt about the song “Mustang Sally.”
It was a small exchange. It stayed with Patty and Mark long after the interview ended, because it showed the person behind the history: humor, warmth and a gift for understatement.
Ride smiled and said she had heard it a few times.
The film grows from that smile.
An inner landscape
Instead of telling Sally Ride’s life in order, the film imagines what it might feel like to float between Earth, memory and the immensity of space. The curve of the planet, orbital flight, starfields and moving spacecraft are both historical record and daydream.
It isn’t trying to recreate history. It suggests thought and remembrance, and the feeling of looking back at our planet from beyond it.
