New & Unique Videos™

A Timeline – Production and Distribution

Early 1980s — The Birth of Specialty Video

New & Unique Videos emerges during the earliest years of consumer home video, when VHS is still a developing medium and independent distribution requires hands-on duplication, mail-order catalogs, and direct relationships with audiences. The company begins identifying underserved niches in fitness, movement, culture, education, and independent filmmaking.

Mid-1980s — Original Productions & Cultural Experimentation

As the VHS market expands, New & Unique Videos produces and distributes original programs alongside carefully selected licensed titles. These include instructional works, performance-based videos, cultural documentaries, and early explorations of wellness, movement, and personal development.
This period reflects an experimental era in home video, when creators could bypass broadcast television entirely.

Late 1980s — Expansion of the Distribution Catalog

The catalog grows to include a wide range of specialty titles, from fitness and instructional series to adult education, creative arts, and classic cinema. Mail-order distribution becomes central, supported by printed catalogs and direct customer engagement.
New & Unique Videos establishes itself as a curator rather than a mass-market seller.

Early 1990s — Shifts in the Home Video Landscape

As the industry moves toward larger retail chains and standardized genres, New & Unique Videos begins to scale back broad catalog distribution. Focus shifts toward select projects, legacy titles, and long-form documentary work aligned with the founders’ creative interests.

Late 1990s–2000s — Archival Preservation

With the decline of VHS and the rise of DVD and digital formats, many earlier distribution titles fall out of circulation. New & Unique Videos preserves records, catalogs, and masters as part of its internal archive, maintaining a historical record of its role in early specialty video distribution.

2010s — Legacy and Reassessment

The rise of streaming platforms and renewed interest in analog media sparks fresh attention toward early home-video pioneers. New & Unique Videos reassesses its archive, separating legacy distribution titles from active projects and clarifying its role as a steward of media history.

2020s — Curated Present, Preserved Past

Today, New & Unique Videos operates with a clear distinction between its current catalog and its Distribution Archive. Select titles remain actively represented, while earlier works are preserved as historical documentation of a formative era in independent media.
The company’s legacy lies not only in what it produced or distributed, but in how it helped shape access to culture outside mainstream channels.
