SALLY RIDE’S ASTRAL DREAM is a short-form art video that blends historic NASA space footage with carefully integrated AI elements, created as a poetic tribute rooted in lived connection.
The project was inspired by a moment from Patty Mooney and Mark Schulze’s own history. Years earlier, they interviewed Sally Ride when she was teaching in the Engineering Department at University of California San Diego. During the conversation, Patty asked her how she felt about the song Mustang Sally. Sally Ride smiled and replied that she had heard it a few times.
That brief exchange, warm and human, revealed something essential. Beneath the history-making achievements was a woman with humor, grace, and an ease that stayed with them long after the interview ended. SALLY RIDE’S ASTRAL DREAM grows from that memory.
Rather than recount biography, the video imagines an interior space. Authentic NASA imagery of orbit, Earth’s curvature, starfields, and spacecraft movement forms the foundation. These images are treated as both record and reverie. AI-assisted elements extend the visuals into a dreamlike dimension, suggesting thought, memory, and the emotional experience of looking back at Earth from beyond it.
Candace Love’s original music shapes the journey. The composition moves gently between vastness and intimacy, guiding the pacing and emotional tone while allowing silence and space to breathe. Sound and image drift together, evoking the sensation of floating between science and wonder.
